Gamers to pay for key Xbox One features

Key features of Microsoft's Xbox One console, which is expected to go on sale in November, will only be available with an annual subscription.

The requirement covers recording and sharing of gameplay videos, making Skype video calls and using a service that finds gaming opponents.

An Xbox Live Gold account that currently costs $60 (£40) will be needed for all these features.

Sony PlayStation 4 owners will also have to pay for some online services.

Microsoft revealed the requirement in an update to webpages detailing the Xbox One's features.

The webpage shows that, as with the current Xbox 360, a Live Gold account is needed if owners want to use their new console for online multiplayer gaming, watch Netflix or similar streaming services and to browse the web via their TV.

In addition, on the Xbox One the annual subscription will let players share videos with friends. The console records a rolling sample of a player's previous five minutes gameplay to make it easier to share key moments.

The payment will also let owners chat to friends via video on Skype and use the OneGuide and SmartMatch services.

OneGuide analyses what Xbox One owners usually watch and recommends TV shows and YouTube content to match. The SmartMatch service links players with other gamers of a similar ability to ensure they are not outclassed in multiplayer matches.

In June, Sony revealed a change to its previous policy which gave all owners of its PlayStation 3 console access to online multiplayer games. With the PlayStation 4, owners will have to pay $50 (£32) a year for a PlayStation Plus account to do the same.

In wishing Bush well, Putin has message for Obama

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram on Thursday to his old sparring partner, former U.S. President George W. Bush, wishing him a quick recovery from heart surgery.

It may have been coincidence that the Kremlin released details of the telegram a day after Barack Obama pulled out of a planned summit with Putin, but little is left to chance in Russian politics.

The warm words to the man who once said he looked Putin in the eye and got a "sense of his soul" highlighted how different the relationship is between the leaders in the Kremlin and the White House now.

Bush described Putin years later as cold blooded, and ties soured over the war between Russia and Georgia which began five years ago this week, but there was respect and camaraderie on display when they first met as presidents in June 2001.

At Obama's most recent meeting with Putin during a G8 summit in Northern Ireland in June, the Russian president scowled, lectured and fidgeted. At times he glowered.

Would a better relationship with Putin have made Obama take a different decision on attending the September talks in Moscow? Perhaps not, but a stronger rapport might have helped them avoid a situation where such a decision was even considered.

"Sometimes, at times of crisis, when diplomats fail to reach a compromise, personal relationships can be important, as a last resort ... There is a lack of personal chemistry between Obama and Putin," said Maria Lipman, a Russian analyst at the Moscow Carnegie Center think tank.

BAD START AT PUTIN'S DACHA

Bush's good start with Putin at talks in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, followed four months later by a meeting at Bush's Texas ranch, stands in contrast to the difficult beginning of the Obama-Putin relationship.

When Obama came to Russia in July 2009, Putin was prime minister but still the dominant figure in Russia under the presidency of his protege Dmitry Medvedev, and the former KGB spy invited Obama to his dacha, or country house.

"We may not end up agreeing on everything, but I think that we can have a tone of mutual respect and consultation that will serve both the American people and the Russian people well," Obama told Putin.

Diplomatic sources said that despite this, Putin went on to give Obama a political lecture and they failed to break the ice. Russian officials, however, say Obama was frosty and has always been high-handed.

The relationship has never developed into a friendship, with Obama appearing to find more in common with the relatively liberal Medvedev. During Putin's re-election campaign in 2012, he accused the United States of funding his opponents.

Yahoo is getting a new logo

Under CEO Marissa Mayer, Yahoo might still be trying to shed its image as a relic of the 1990s Internet era.

But hey, it's getting a new logo!

Yahoo announced Wednesday that it will unveil a new corporate logo September 4 -- the first such change since the company was founded 18 years ago. The new look will retain the current purple color scheme and, yes, its trademark exclamation point. Yodel away, Yahoo fans.

"Over the past year, there's been a renewed sense of purpose and progress at Yahoo!, and we want everything we do to reflect this spirit of innovation," Chief Marketing Officer Kathy Savitt wrote in a blog post. "While the company is rapidly evolving, our logo — the essence of our brand — should too."

To build some buzz around the new logo, the Internet company will display a different variation of the logo on its homepage and throughout its network in the United States for each of the next 30 days. The first example, shown above, opts for a more streamlined look, although the second "O" is larger than the first, reflecting -- in Yahoo's words -- the company's " fun, vibrant, and welcoming" character.

The variations on the new logo -- this video clip offers a potential preview -- also will be showcased each day on Yahoo's Twitter account (#dailylogo). Why the interest in Yahoo CEO?

Mayer has been working to reinvent the struggling Yahoo since she took over leadership of the company in July of last year. In the past 12 months Yahoo has bought more than 16 startups, including the popular Tumblr blogging platform, and reinvigorated its older brands such as photo site Flickr.

Under her reign, Yahoo's stock price has climbed from $15 to almost $30 (it's currently at $27), although some analysts remain skeptical about the company's long-term fortunes.

Yahoo's rebranding follows similar logo changes by other aging Internet giants, including AOL, eBay and Microsoft. "The new logo will be a modern redesign that's more reflective of our reimagined design and new experiences," Savitt said.

T-Mobile US customer growth beats Street, shares rise

T-Mobile US reported subscriber growth that blew past analysts' expectations as it ended four years of customer losses with a big marketing push and its launch of the Apple Inc iPhone, sending its shares up almost 5 percent.

But the customer growth came at the cost of heavy spending on marketing, which weighed on its financial results. Its parent company, Deutsche Telekom AG, which owns 74 percent of T-Mobile US, said it would plow more money into the No. 4 U.S. mobile provider to help it continue to grow.

T-Mobile US on Thursday said it added a net 688,000 contract customers in the second quarter, including wireless broadband customers and phone users, well ahead of an average forecast of 140,000 from four analysts, whose estimates ranged from 33,000 to 254,000.

Bigger rival AT&T Inc added just over 550,000 subscribers in the quarter, while Sprint Corp lost 1.045 million contract customers as it shut down its Nextel network.

T-Mobile US Chief Executive John Legere told CNBC that his company's growth was helped by customer defections from AT&T. In its marketing, T-Mobile US often compares its prices and policies to those of AT&T.

"We're taking customers from AT&T at a ratio of two to one," Legere said in the television interview. "They're in complete fight-back mode, and I find it more humorous every day."

AT&T tried to buy T-Mobile in 2011 but the deal was blocked by U.S. regulators. Since then the companies have been competing with each more viciously than ever.

While New Street analyst Jonathan Chaplin was impressed with T-Mobile US' customer growth, he questioned whether it would be able to keep up the pace.

"The question remains as to whether TMUS can sustain the performance in postpaid as the iPhone buzz fades and competitive intensity rises," Chaplin said in a research note.

Customer growth helped boost the company's revenue, but T-Mobile US had to spend heavily on marketing to attract new users.

The company, which merged with smaller rival MetroPCS in April, said that including MetroPCS, adjusted second-quarter earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) dropped 30 percent from a year earlier to $1.3 billion.

Chaplin said he had expected $1.33 billion.

T-Mobile US, which last recorded subscriber growth in the first quarter of 2009, set a target for 2013 net subscriber additions of between 1 million and 1.2 million.

Citi analyst Michael Rollins said that target suggests a slowdown in growth from the second quarter.

"We believe second-quarter headline results could be as good as it gets for a little while," Rollins said in a research note.

Publishers object to U.S. restrictions on Apple in e-books case

Five of the largest U.S. publishers objected to tough new restrictions sought by the U.S. government against Apple Inc for illegally conspiring to raise e-book prices.

In a motion filed on Wednesday in U.S. district court in Manhattan, the publishers said a proposed final order in the case would effectively prevent Apple from entering agreements that limit its ability to discount books.

The publishers said provisions proposed by the U.S. Justice Department would instead punish the publishers, which had already reached settlements with the federal government and dozens of states, paying $166 million to benefit consumers.

"Despite achieving their stated goal of returning price competition, plaintiffs now seek to improperly impose additional, unwarranted restrictions on the settling defendants, thereby depriving each publisher of the benefit of its bargain with plaintiffs," the publishers wrote.

The motion came ahead of a Friday hearing on whether the court should adopt remedies proposed by the Justice Department and 33 U.S. states and territories after a ruling last month by U.S. District Judge Denise Cote that Apple conspired with the publishers.

The Justice Department accused Apple of conspiring to undercut Amazon.com Inc's e-book dominance, causing some e-book prices to rise to $12.99 or $14.99 from the $9.99 that the online retailer charged. Amazon once had a 90 percent market share.

Following Cote's ruling, the government asked that she require Apple to end contracts with the five publishers and be prevented for five years from entering contracts that the Justice Department says would restrict Apple from competing on price.

Apple would also be forced to hire an internal antitrust compliance officer and employ a court-appointed external monitor.

But objections have now been posed by the publishers, which include Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group Inc, News Corp's HarperCollins Publishers LLC, Penguin Random House LLC, CBS Corp's Simon & Schuster Inc and Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH's Macmillan.

In their motion, the publishers said the settlement would effectively eliminate Apple's ability to enter agreements allowing for discounts by eliminating for five years its use of so-called agency agreements, in which publishers set prices and Apple gets a commission.

As a result, the publishers say the proposals don't impose any limitation on Apple's pricing behavior and instead "effectively punish" publishers by preventing them from entering into agency agreements with the iPad manufacturer.

As a result, the publishers say the Justice Department's proposal conflicts with their own settlements with the government, which allowed them, with certain limitations, to enter into agency deals with retailers.

A spokesman for Apple declined comment, while representatives for the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Analysis: Ottawa set to leave telecom door open for Verizon

Canada's wireless industry is bracing for its biggest shakeup in decades as Ottawa appears impervious to pleas that it block U.S. giant Verizon Communications Inc from the lucrative market.

The three big domestic players, Rogers Communications Inc, BCE Inc's Bell and Telus Corp, which cater to 90 percent of the country's wireless subscribers, have launched a massive public relations campaign against rules designed to increase competition.

They include giving foreign carriers preferential access to airwaves being auctioned next year, and looser restrictions on foreign ownership of small wireless operators, which the local market leaders have been warned away from.

With full-page newspaper ads and the creation of a www.fairforcanada.ca website, the incumbents argue that the entrance of a company like Verizon would force them to cut jobs and trim coverage in rural areas.

"We don't think organizations like Verizon, that are deeply resourced ... need to be bootstrapped by the Canadian government," Telus Chief Executive Darren Entwistle told Reuters in an interview last month.

Telus and its peers have zeroed in on Verizon because the U.S. company offered to buy Canadian telecom startup Wind Mobile for $600 million to $800 million, and is in talks to acquire another startup called Mobilicity, sources familiar with the matter previously told Reuters.

But given years of concerted government efforts to boost competition in the sector, the Canadian carriers' chances of success appear slim.

"We want all regions of Canada to benefit from competitive market forces, which is why more progress must be made," Canadian Industry Minister James Moore said last week. "We will continue to stay the course by ensuring Canadians benefit from a competitive telecommunications industry."

Verizon has declined to comment in detail on any plans for Canada. Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo said last month that Canada remained an "exploratory exercise" for the company.

BOOSTING COMPETITION

The Canadian government has tried in the past to tilt the playing field in favor of new players, including setting aside airwaves in a 2008 auction that ushered in new entrants who have helped lower wireless prices in Canada.

Then the highest in the world, Canadian bills have since fallen to around U.S. levels. Bills in the two countries remain almost 80 percent higher than the OECD average, topped only by Japan and Australia.

A Verizon Wireless smartphone customer pays about $100 a month over a two-year contract for unlimited U.S.-wide talk and text and 2GB of data, similar to the cost for Canada's services. Canadian roaming charges are significantly higher.

Cesc Fabregas spurns Man Utd and commits to Barcelona

Cesc Fabregas has pledged to stay with Barcelona, ending Manchester United's hopes of signing the midfielder. United had two bids rejected during the close season and were believed to have considered a third offer, which would have broken the club record of £30.7m. "Triumphing in Barcelona has been my dream since I was a child," said 26-year-old Fabregas.

"I am very happy at Barcelona and I haven't spoken to any other club in the last two years." Fabregas began his career at Barcelona and returned to the Nou Camp from Arsenal in August 2011. on a five-year contract.

Last season he started 30 of Barcelona's 38 league games but was substituted on 16 occasions, while in the Champions League he was in the starting line-up for six of the team's 12 games and was taken off three times.

Speculation that he wanted a return to the Premier League persisted but Fabregas said: "Stories have been invented. I was never given any sign from the club to make me think they didn't want me, I have always felt wanted here."

There have been major recent changes at Barcelona, Tito Vilanova stepping down as coach because of ill health to be replaced by Argentine Gerardo Martino and Brazil striker Neymar recruited from Santos, but Fabregas is convinced he has a future with the club.

"I spoke to [Barca vice-president Josep] Bartomeu, the president [Sandro Rosell] in person and Tata also told me he wanted me to stay and there's been no problem. "I know what Martino wants from me, it is very clear. I will have to work very hard."

Corvette concepts come to LeMay Museum

Nevertheless, a trio of rare Chevrolet Corvettes is venturing out from the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan, for display at the LeMay Museum in Tacoma, Washington. The cars will be on view from 9 Aug through 11 Aug, ahead of an exhibit at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance, in celebration of the Corvette’s 60th anniversary.

Automotive history buffs in the US’s pacific northwest have a gem in the LeMay, which inaugurated a show-stopping new campus in 2012, and they will surely appreciate the chance to see the 1959 Stingray Racer, the 1961 Mako Shark and the 1969 Manta Ray in the metal – or fibreglass, as it were.

The visiting stars are part of a Corvette retrospective running through the end of the year. “But we will only have the concept vehicles for one weekend, so sports car fans, Corvette lovers and people who appreciate classic automotive design should make plans to visit during that weekend,” noted LeMay president David Madeira.

The Stingray, a collaboration between former GM styling boss Bill Mitchell and famed designers Larry Shinoda and Pete Brock, was built to test handling and performance, while forecasting the styling direction of the 1963 Corvette (and, unquestionably, Speed Racer’s Mach V).

Mitchell and Shinoda reconvened for another gig with the Mako Shark I of 1961, creating a glass-roofed special that presaged the work of such noted car customisers as George Barris and Dean Jeffries.

The 1965 Manta Ray saw the third-generation Corvette stretched out, with an elongated nose and tail as well as flush-mounted headlights in lieu of the factory car’s pop-ups. A cartoonish imitation appeared in the Mark Hamill vehicle (yes, after Star Wars there was such a thing) Corvette Summer.

Regular admission to the LeMay: $14. Leaving your nose-print on the Stingray’s glass: priceless.

Twitter abuse: Man arrested in Bristol

A 32-year-old man has been arrested by police in Bristol in connection with threats made on Twitter.

He is suspected of offences against two women, who reported the allegations on 25 and 29 July.

The BBC understands it relates to threats made against Labour MP Stella Creasy and feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez.

They are among a number of prominent women recently targeted online by anonymous abusers, so-called "trolls".

It is the third such arrest since allegations surfaced two weeks ago.

The man is being held under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 and is due to be taken to a Bristol police station, the Metropolitan Police said.

Extra staff

There have been calls for Twitter to do more to prevent abuse after anonymous users of the site sent messages to well-known women threatening bomb and rape attacks.

Female journalists, columnists and the historian Mary Beard were all targeted.

Last weekend some users boycotted the site to protest against trolling - the practice of insulting or intimidating others, usually under a pseudonym, to provoke a reaction.

Twitter attracted media and police attention after campaigner Ms Criado-Perez was targeted by trolls when she successfully lobbied for a woman's face to be pictured once more on UK banknotes.

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Manchester on 28 July after Ms Criado-Perez reported the abuse to police, while a 25-year-old man was held by Northumbria Police on 30 July in connection with the allegations as well as those against Ms Creasy.

Twitter has drafted in extra staff to deal with the levels of abuse and has moved to clarify its reporting procedures.

Last week the company apologised to the women affected, saying what had happened was "unacceptable".

Critical phase' for Iter fusion dream

The world's largest bid to harness the power of fusion has entered a "critical" phase in southern France.

The Iter project at Cadarache in Provence is receiving the first of about one million components for its experimental reactor.

Dogged by massive cost rises and long delays, building work is currently nearly two years behind schedule.

The construction of the key building has even been altered to allow for the late delivery of key components.

"We're not hiding anything - it's incredibly frustrating," David Campbell, a deputy director, told BBC News.

"Now we're doing everything we can to recover as much time as possible.

"The project is inspiring enough to give you the energy to carry on - we'd all like to see fusion energy as soon as possible." After initial design problems and early difficulties co-ordinating this unique international project, there is now more confidence about the timetable.

Since the 1950s, fusion has offered the dream of almost limitless energy - copying the fireball process that powers the Sun - fuelled by two readily available forms of hydrogen.

The attraction is a combination of cheap fuel, relatively little radioactive waste and no emissions of greenhouse gases.

But the technical challenges of not only handling such an extreme process but also designing ways of extracting energy from it have always been immense.

In fact, fusion has long been described as so difficult to achieve that it's always been touted as being "30 years away".

Now the Iter reactor will put that to the test. Known as a "tokamak", it is based on the design of Jet, a European pilot project at Culham in Oxfordshire.

It will involve creating a plasma of superheated gas reaching temperatures of more than 200 million C - conditions hot enough to force deuterium and tritium atoms to fuse together and release energy.

The whole process will take place inside a giant magnetic field in the shape of a ring - the only way such extreme heat can be contained.

The plant at JET has managed to achieve fusion reactions in very short bursts but required the use of more power than it was able to produce.

The reactor at Iter is on a much larger scale and is designed to generate 10 times more power - 500 MW - than it will consume. ter brings together the scientific and political weight of governments representing more than half the world's population - including the European Union, which is supporting nearly half the cost of the project, together with China, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States.

AOL to buy video ad platform for $405 million

AOL Inc said on Wednesday it would buy Adap.tv, which helps businesses buy and sell ads for online video electronically, for $405 million, its largest acquisition since the 2011 purchase of the Huffington Post.

In recent months, AOL has turned its attention to video advertising as it tries to get more sales from marketers and reduce its reliance on lucrative but dwindling revenue from its dial-up subscription service.

To that end, AOL also reported higher-than-expected revenue for the second quarter on an increase in display, search and ads from third-party networks.

Shares of AOL were up 3.6 percent at $37.50 in trading before the market opened.

Revenue rose almost 1 percent to $541.3 million, compared with the analysts' average estimate of $539.6 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net income fell to $28.5 million, or 35 cents per share, compared with $970.8 million, or $10.17 per share, a year earlier, when AOL sold a group of patents to Microsoft Corp for more than $1 billion.

AOL said it was paying $322 million in cash and about $83 million in stock for Adap.tv.
