Airwaves cleared for high-speed mobile broadband
By Steve Outridge July 30th, 2013
The last airwaves needed for the launch of 800MHz high-speed mobile broadband will be cleared this week, Digital UK has announced.
Digital UK, a not-for-profit owned by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Arqiva, is overseeing the clearance of terrestrial TV services from the 800MHz spectrum band for 4G mobile broadband services, on behalf of the government.
In February last year, Freeview DTT channels in parts of the UK started moving to new frequencies to allow for the rollout of 4G mobile services.
Digital UK says the process will end on 31 July, as the last engineering works are conducted in north-east Scotland and the Western Isles – five months earlier than planned and also under budget.
Signals have been realigned at more than 270 transmitters, serving one in four homes.
Digital UK chief executive Sir David Scott said: “Thanks to the organisation’s experiences from switchover and the tremendous work of engineers at Arqiva, clearance will be completed ahead of schedule and had seen minimal disruption to viewers. From the end of this month airwaves will be clear for more mobile operators to deliver super-fast mobile broadband across the UK.”
Culture secretary Maria Miller said the addition of 4G services would help Britain succeed in the global race. “Completing the clearance of the 800MHz band means mobile companies can roll out their services across the UK and help deliver the £2-3 billion a year boost to the UK economy we anticipate from 4G.”
Ofcom estimates that 4G services will provide at least £20 billion in benefits to UK consumers over the next 10 years. New mobile services are expected to become available in some areas from this summer.
Digital UK previously led the implementation of the digital TV switchover from 2008-2012.
More than two million people use the company’s advice line and website.
