$BLAP RadioTalkShow with Rabbi Tobi Schneier of House of Faith N Fashion.
Last night’s guests were Dr. Scott Bienenfeld
www.reboundbrooklyn.com – specializing in Addiction Phsycology,
and Joe Schrank
a Social Worker and founder of Loft 107 - a Rebound Center.
Also take a look at Thefix.com
$BLAP will be helping these men to disseminate information on the latest addiction information, helping their cause, which is to eliminate the “Rehab Centers” and get the addicts out of “church basement sessions” and into the community.
Their modern approach is a combination of medical and community help with an intensive out-patient program – the only one of its kind in New York, perhaps the only one of its kind in the East.
Instead of the famous “Rehab in LA, and then the Black Hole when returning to NY”, these two men are showing out-patients how to deal with getting back into the community of NYC, where there is a “bar on every corner”.
They see the solution as an “ongoing integrated lifestyle” when you RETURN home, and not just the revolving door of more REHAB visits.
Because today’s patients are different then the patients of the 1930’s – they are younger, and still want to go to parties, they must find ways to adapt their life-style to their solution.
Loft 107 is a point of re-entry back into the community, and a great way to stay out of Rehab.
Almost 20,000 radio listeners listened to the experts claims – they even took calls, including one from a man who was in a “Loop” of problems.
We heard a very strong point about the fact that most addicts don’t want to really give up their addiction. It’s not like a “chest pain” where you rush to your doctor for help. Usually, it’s others in their surrounding – family, friends, etc. who convince them to go seek help.
Dr. Bienenfeld and Mr. Schrank spoke of the three stages of accepting the problems:
1) pre-contemplation: here the person usually is not really aware that he needs help
2) 2) contemplation: he starts to believe he might have a problem
3) acceptance: ready to change.
A convincing argument was made that today’s Rat Race has pressures that are often unsustainable – there is no “Pause” button to hit, and some feel that reaching to dope or alcohol is the only solution. The importance of support-systems was stressed again and again by the two experts.
In the end, one of the greatest needs is the dialogue. The comparison was drawn to other great killers – such as HIV or Diabetes, and how society has been drawn into dialogue: through celebrities, Marathons, athletes and Social Media. Things that used to be hidden as a family secret are brought into the open, and we can put a name on it.
Rabbi Tobi was incredibly serious through the entire interview, but brought some of her famous charm at the end, when Dr. Bienenfeld asked her to provide a definition of “shoe addiction”. Without missing a heartbeat, she shot back: “Nobody has ever died from having too many shoes”!
A wonderful Radio Program – if you didn’t hear it – I would highly advise it.
