College Shows Continued Growth With $4.6B in Licensed Merchandise Sales
Jun 12, 2012
A new licensing report shows college is closing the gap on Major League Baseball (MLB) as number one in licensed sports sales, while IMG is the world's leading global licensing company.
According to License! Global Magazine's 2012 rankings of top licensors and licensing agencies, "college" ranked #10 at $4.6B in total retail sales in 2011, paced by institutions represented by The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), a division of IMG College. College was up from last year's reported 2010 sales of $4.3B and finished second only to MLB, which claimed $5B in retail sales, even with the previous year.
While college gained ground on the MLB's very successful licensing program, according to the report titled Top 125 Global Licensors, NFL finished at #13 ($3.25B in retail sales, down from $3.3B last year), NBA at #16 ($3B, same as last year), and NHL at #35 (#1.3B, last year N/A).
Helped by red-hot collegiate licensing, IMG Worldwide has been firing on all cylinders, coming in at No. 1 in the Top 30 Global Licensing Agencies. IMG represented $8B in global retail sales of licensed merchandise in 2011. This included college and all of the great properties under IMG Licensing. The second-place company, Equity Management, trailed at $5.4B.
"We're very happy with the continued growth of collegiate licensed merchandise during a difficult economy, but we are not resting our on laurels," said Cory Moss, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of The Collegiate Licensing Company. "With new licensed products debuting in the coming months, the biggest-ever College Colors Day planned for the back-to-school sales period, and a new retail program to be introduced for college football, CLC will continue to lead the way for increasing college merchandise sales and brand exposure for our licensee and college partners."
