John Lennon, an icon and legend in the music world. He was known for his part in The Beatles and a successful solo career that was cut short by his murder in December 1980. Shortly before this he had made a return to music, after a five year break it was his journey to Bermuda, on a sailing boat, that inspired this return. Little was known about this journey, until now.
Lennon Bermuda is a book and double CD combo that documents Lennon’s time in Bermuda and the journey he took. The double CD takes songs spanning the entire of Lennon’s career, from early days in The Beatles to the end of his solo career, bringing together artists from all over the world to cover and pay tribute to the legend. One thing is for sure; Lennon Bermuda takes these classic songs to a place you’ve never heard before.
The album is filled to brim with guest musicians and local Bermuda talent, putting their own spin on classic Beatles and Lennon tracks. On the first disc, the biggest name is probably Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music fame who gives a live, soulful rendition of ‘Jealous Guy’. Other highlights include Heather Nova’s spine tingling version of ‘Norwegian Wood’, Christina’s Firth’s heart-warming rendition of ‘Julia’ and closer of the first disc ‘All You Need Is Love’ sung by The Love Singers which brings an upbeat, Caribbean flavour to the classic Beatles track.
The second disc takes the same style and approach as the first. ‘Mind Games’ by Bermuda local Joy T. Barnum is a beautiful spin on the solo Lennon track of the same name, giving it another Bermuda makeover. Another highlight comes from McCartney K. in the form of ‘Grow Old with Me’, but the real gem comes from another Bermuda local. Robert ‘Sai’ Emery’s version of the iconic track ‘Imagine’ is powerful and stunning and really stands out on the second disc.
It was always going to be a challenge taking so many classic tracks and giving them a new feel. Lennon Bermuda, however, has taken on this task and passed with flying colours by giving a new spin to nearly every track on it and really capturing the spirit and music of Bermuda. It’s clear to see why Lennon loved it so much.
