What does all of this mean?
As the law stands, you can only sue the original poster/communicator of defamatory material for defamation. Therefore, a problem is created when a poster goes online and creates an anonymous user name/profile and then posts false, reputation ruining comments. Unless, you can prove the identity of the poster, you can not recover for any damages you have suffered due to the commentary. According to § 230, the website in which the defamatory material is posted has no liability for the content, unless an exception, and is not required, unless specific measures are met, to disclose the identity of the poster.
