Job growth slows in July compared to previous month
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The private sector added 163,000 jobs in July, though employment growth ticked down compared to the preceding month, according to data released on Wednesday.
The rise in July employment was led by small businesses and the service-providing sector, payrolls-processor Automatic Data Processing Inc. said.
It marked a slowdown from a revised gain of 172,000 in June; a prior estimate had pegged growth at 176,000 jobs in June.
Economists had expected a July increase of 120,000 private-sector jobs.
Despite ticking down in July, private hiring has strengthened since spring.
“This gain in private employment is strong enough to suggest that the national unemployment rate may have declined in July,” said Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers, which produces ADP’s report.
