If one wants to escape bad weather, Karen is right. Lived in SD for a number of years, with CTIX money, one might try La Jolla. Very nice country club if one is into that environment. Great restaurants, great cove for swimming, snorkeling/diving, beach. Carlsbad is can get hotter, more inland. Mission Hills is nice for large homes with views, close to the downtown area which was nicely renovated and very active with restaurants, entertainment, close to baseball and football stadium. Universities are close for those with college age kids. One major attraction, good golf everywhere. One warning, stay out of Mexico. The Mexican police love to arrest Americans for drinking a beer outside of a bar. A lot of bad guys, crime. There are a number of golf course communities up and down the coast. Was there in the Dan Fouts era. Unreal football at the time. Funny how their weak D line was shipped to the 49ers who took them and made them All Pros and clinched their Super Bowl(s) run with Montana. They got them out of the druggie environment and it made all the difference. We've been in the SF area, for 20+ years, like it better. New Niner stadium being built now. Nice, new Giant park. SF is a major attraction. Still have friends and relatives in SD area, and it's a good place to be.
