Kanola, there is a dual problem with the Obama strategy and the Republican challenge. Possibly there is some substantiation for global warming, and probably some of the reason behind that event is more consumption of fossil fuels over a long period of time. However, there is also a global economic situation that currently depends on fossil fuel to generate the power needed for industrialization and traffic movement, whether boat, car or plane. Understandably a more controlled growth of fossil fuel burning does make sense, while at the same time bringing in comparably priced alternative energy programs. And that is where the agenda takes a turn. Current methods of alternative energy cost a good percentage more than fossil fuel energy methods. So at a time when the government is adding deficits to the budget, is it wise to also add more taxes on top of that in order to effectively control fossil fuel usage, or would it be wiser to offer private investors tax incentives for their investment in alternative energy such that the costs of alternative energy could be more competitive with fossil fuel? The reality is that the simply by taxing the energy businesses of today with higher taxes only accomplishes two things; one is obviously higher taxes for everyone, and; two is more revenue for the government to essentially squander. Of course there is also a hidden third issue; any additional taxing also gives the government increasing authority and power over more and more businesses and taxpayers. But unfortunately the average person on the street has no clue about these ssues. Good post and thanks for bringing it to our attention.
