The Flushaway® brand of women’s pads and liners differ from major competitors because they are flushable, biodegradable and dispersible. The product can simply be flushed down the toilet, or put in the trash where it will biodegrade. It is also acceptable for certain septic tanks as well.
Independant biodegradable tests report that Flushaway® biodegrades in 71 days - that's less than 3 months - as tested under American Standard for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D5988-03.
Standard sanitary products with their use of plastics such as polyethylene or polypropylene, are estimated to take 200 years, or more, to degrade in landfill.
Polyethylene is often the main component in plastic shopping bags available at the check-out which often ended up in landfill, and is why many countries and supermarkets have stopped this free give-away.
If I put Flushaway® in the trash and not down the toilet will it still biodegrade?
Yes. The Flushaway® product is designed to biodegrade if you put it in the trash.
In fact the independant biodegradable test was carried out as though the product had been placed directly in landfill. So if you put it in the trash (landfill) in 71 days the product will have biodegraded just like in those biodegradable tests that were carried out.
Is biodegrading really so important?
If you dispose of a Flushaway® product today then in 3 months the used product will have biodegraded. If you put other non-biodegradable products in the trash they will be around for an estimated 200 years. We are not sure that's a legacy your future generations will appreciate.
What does flushable and dispersible mean and why is it important?
Many items are "flushable" because they can fit through the hole of the toilet. As examples, the top of a plastic pen or small plastic toys might also be "flushable" but only because they fit through the hole of the toilet.
Dispersible means that after the item is put in the toilet that the water and motion cause it to break up and disperse in the water. Then it can pass through the toilet and waste water drainage system without causing a blockage .... unlike your kids plastic toy.
What do you mean when you claim - "Tests prove the pad biodegrades 60% faster than the ASTM D5988-3 biodegradable standard requires"?
The test standard ASTM D5988-03 requires that the product biodegrades to a specified level in 180 days. Flushaway® achieves that level in 71 days.
M y toilet sometimes blocks or backs up. Is it ok to use Flushaway ® in my toilet?
If you have this problem we recommend fixing your toilet and/or drains before using Flushaway®.
