NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ--(Marketwired - Jun 25, 2013) - AXION International Holdings, Inc. (
AXION has received three purchase orders to date for the new product from Max Energy Services, a division of Max Environmental which is located in the center of the Marcellus Shale natural gas region and provides environmental and waste management services to energy companies. Max Environmental is providing the curbing boards to Pennsylvania based Rice Energy , a natural gas exploration and production company. Max Environmental also sells and rents other AXION products to the oil and gas industry including STRUXTURE® Construction Mats to Midstream oil and natural gas companies.
Rice Energy will use AXION's STRUXURE® Curbing Boards as a perimeter berm around high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liners to prevent contaminants from leaving the drilling site. Oil and gas drillers protect the environment immediately surrounding the drill site by laying down HDPE liners to contain oil, gas and other liquids coming out of wells. Traditionally, drilling sites have been protected using a variety of berming materials including creosote coated wood railroad ties or porous molded foam materials.
STRUXURE® Curbing Boards' benefits over wood and foam are both financial and environmental. Wood and foam based products deteriorate at an accelerated rate when wrapped in HDPE liners with high temperatures, moisture and no access to air. STRUXURE® Curbing Boards are impervious to moisture and have a significantly longer life cycle than wood products. Wood and foam products also absorb and release chemicals from drilling sites, creating challenges in transporting and disposing of them after the drill site is disassembled. STRUXURE® Curbing Boards do not absorb or release chemicals, making them a more environmentally friendly choice and reusable on site after site.
AXION uniquely offers the oil and gas industry a closed-loop environmentally friendly solution that reduces the carbon and waste footprint of their operations. HDPE liners used in drilling are typically placed in landfills at the end of their useful life. Millions of tons of synthetic liners are placed in landfills each year across the U.S. AXION is now diverting these HDPE liners out of the waste stream and using them as raw material to make STRUXURE® products including curbing boards.
AXION is expanding its product line to serve the growing oil and gas production industry to include STRUXURE® Rig Mats and STRUXURE® Drilling Pads, which are currently being developed and are slated for launch later in 2013. AXION products for pipelines include STRUXURE® Pipe Supports and STRUXURE® Construction Mats, which have already been purchased by several pipeline operators.
Max Environmental's Vice President of Sales for Energy Services, Chris Morgan, commented, "The energy industry has a great interest in sustainable products with longer life cycles that minimize the industry's impact on the environment. AXION's products offer a very compelling value proposition with the huge added benefit of environmental sustainability. STRUXURE® Curbing Boards are a great alternative to traditional wood and foam products and we think we'll be providing a lot of them to drillers across the U.S."
"The energy industry is a high priority end-use segment for AXION. The value proposition of our products is very clear for this industry which has a great interest in sustainable materials and makes purchase decisions quickly. We've aligned ourselves with distributors who are selling AXION products into their installed base of oil and gas industry customers," stated Dave Crane, Executive Vice President Building Products for AXION.
"Our team has done a fantastic job of identifying markets outside of our core rail business, where our composite infrastructure grade building materials uniquely create value for customers. Our new products use our current molds and machinery, thus minimizing any additional costs associated with new product introductions," added AXION President and CEO Steve Silverman.
