Rizhao is the Eastern Bridgehead of the New Eurasian Continental Bridge. Located at the joining point of the Pacific Economic Rim, the Pan Yellow Sea Economic Rim, China’s Costal Economic Belt and the Economic Belt along the New Eurasian Continental Bridge, Rizhao is a convenient estuary and open-up window for the middle and western regions along the Bridge. As one of the eight cities of the Shandong Peninsula City Cluster under key provincial planning and construction and the only estuary for Southern Shandong Economic Belt, Rizhao is an important economic growth pole for the future development of Shandong Province.

With “two ports connecting with the world and the continental bridge linking the Europe and Asia”, Rizhao enjoys a convenient transportation network consisting of port, railway, highway and aviation.

Port:

Rizhao enjoys remarkable port advantages. It has two port areas, namely Shijiu Port area and Lanshan Port area. With broad bay, deep water, vast land area, mild climate and no ice or silt, Rizhao Port has excellent conditions for port building. It now has 49 productive berths which can handle ships of 300,000 tons. The handling capacity reaches 150 million tons. Now Rizhao Port is a first level port in China’s ore transportation system, export port for south China coal transportation channel, China’s largest transfer base for bulk cement, China’s second largest processing and transfer base for grain and oil in the north area, the largest limber unloading distribution center and largest distributing base for liquefied chemicals in the north of Yangtze River. It is also a base port for domestic container trade and feeder service port for international trade. Being a large transfer and storage base for petroleum and natural gas under national planning, Rizhao Port occupies an important position in China’s layout of productivity and large bulk cargo transportation. In 2003, the passenger and cargo ferry line from Rizhao Port to Pyongtaek in Korea was open to public. In 2010, the cargo throughput of Rizhao Port amounted to 227 million tons, making in the 9th largest port along China’s coast and the 2nd largest port in Shandong Province. The throughput of the container terminal jointly built with Qingdao Port, reached 1.061 million TEUs, with an increase of 29.2%. The long-term planning of Rizhao Port has been approved which aims to build 280 deepwater berths with an annual throughput capacity of 600 million tons.Railway:

There are three railways in Rizhao, namely Ri-He (Rizhao-Heze) Railway, Ping-Lan (Pingshang-Lanshan) Railway and Jiao-Xin (Jiaozhou-Xinyi) Railway. The Ri-He Railway can directly reach the Rotterdam Port of Netherlands and Antwerp Port of Belgium via Xi’an and Alataw Pass of Xinjiang Autonomous Region, forming the 11,000-kilometer New Eurasian Continental Bridge. It is planned to build "three horizontal & two vertical " railways in the 12th FIVE year plan. "Three horizontals” are  Xin-He-Yan-Ri (Xinxiang-Heze-Yanzhou-Rizhao) Railway, Ping-Lan (Pingshang-Lanshan) Railway, Railway from Central and Southern Shanxi to Rizhao Port; “two verticals” are the Jiao-Xin (Jiaozhou-Xinyi)Railway and Qing-Ri-Lian(Qingdao-Rizhao-Lianyungang)Railway.

Highway:

There are two expressways, namely Ridong Expressway and Tongsan Expressway and 12 national highways and provincial highways in Rizhao. It is planned to build "three horizontal & two vertical "expressways in the 12th FIVE year plan. “Three verticals”are  Shen-hai(Shenyang-Haikou) Expressway, WeiRi(Weifang-Rizhao) Expressway and Qing-Lin(Qingzhou-Linshu) Expressway.“Two horizontals”are Ri-Lan(Rizhao-Lankao) Expressway and Lan-Lin(Lanshan-Linyi) Expressway.

Aviation?

There are three airports within a radius of 150 kilometers, namely Qingdao International Airport, Lianyungang Airport and Linyi Airport, all of which are accessible by expressway. Rizhao Virtual Airport of Qingdao Liuting International Airport was set up in Rizhao. Rizhao Airport is planned to construct.
