RIZHAO, a seaport in eastern China's Shandong province, posted an 11.8 per cent year-on-year increase in overall cargo to 284 million tonnes in 2012, noting that container throughput hit 1.75 million TEU, reported Xinhua without providing comparative box figures.
The report said the growth is satisfactory under the circumstances when international and domestic market is shrinking, and competition from neighbouring ports is becoming fiercer.
The port contributed last year's growth to its effort in making closer connections with its customers and expansion of its business to central and western hinterland regions It succeeded in developing 138 new customers last year and launching five new shipping lines.
Rizhao has built up container, ore and oil terminals of 100,000, 200,000 and 300,000 tonnes during recent years. It put on an extra handling capacity of 4.5 million tonnes and 780,000 square metres' extra space for its stack yard in 2012. The port now has a total handling capacity of 156 million tonnes and storage capacity of 30 million tonnes. It has become one of the major hub ports in China
