The very scattered AIS shore antennas have a range

The very scattered AIS shore antennas have a range of at most 40-100 miles depending on location/elevation (there is 1 on a Pacific island w a longer range) which is why I stopped following Ilia when it was 100 miles out in a straight line for Ningbo China- which the sites indicated as its destination-so it surprised us all when JCM told us it was near san francisco-
why would it go 100 or more miles out in a slightly southerly direction (Ningbo is slightly south of Ensenada) only to turn N along the coast?
I could understand it going 30 miles out in NW direction to avoid recreational and commercial shoreline traffic for insurance purposes to go to Oregon
Some sites like vesseltracker and lloyds will supposedly give you satellite coverage for a fee if you register above and beyond but I havent bothered because we havent had enough ships to make it worthwhile and I've already given and lost enough-like 3 years of my life and money- for the cause
I didnt know if Kubi was talking about tacosnoop or some other personage or just his stomach rumbling
