Martis Camp Community Nestled In California’s Mountain Range
Whether it is clothes, transport, gadgets or holidays, the once-derided sustainable option has been transformed in recent years into not only the intelligent option but also a stylish one.
There are few better examples of this sea change than in the high-end construction sector, where opportunities abound to build to the most exacting environmental standards. In the US, this means attaining the coveted LEED certificate , an award Martis Camp community buildings recently won.
Martis Camp covers 2,177 acres and is a series of high-end homes located in California, not far from North Lake Tahoe – specifically, in the setting of Martis Valley, around a mile above sea level. The settlement consists of 653 plots of land, and is already home to 100 completed houses, all of which adhere to the guidelines of the local Architectural Handbook and its emphasis on “architectural creativity compatible with the mountain environment”.
Prices for custom homes start at USD 2 million, something that provides access to a host of community opportunities – clearly, Martis Camp is aimed at families passionate about pursuing an outdoor lifestyle, with Lookout Mountain not far away and the immediate vicinity offering hiking trails, biking, boating, rafting and horse riding, as well as winter sports, such as snowboarding and skiing.
A host of other outdoor activities include a spectacular 18-hole golf course, which developers insist “blends scrupulous design with the dramatic topography of the High Sierras”, a spa, library and tennis pavilion. How environmentally friendly activities such as golf can be is a moot point, though it should be stressed that Martis Camp does not seem to hold itself up as some sort of eco Shangri-La.
On the whole, however, there is much to admire eco-wise, and with its organic community garden and its vitally important LEED certification (for all community buildings), it seems there is a determined focus on attaining at least some kind of harmony with the environment. With further LEED certified buildings in the pipeline, Martis Camp goes some way to show that in the past decade, high-end and sustainability have become much more comfortable companions.
