ECONOMIC REPORTS The data will include retail sales for June and business inventories for May (Monday); the Consumer Price Index for June (Tuesday); housing starts for June and the Federal Reserve report on current economic conditions, known as the beige book (Wednesday); and weekly jobless claims, existing home sales for June and leading economic indicators for June (Thursday).
CORPORATE EARNINGS Companies reporting results will include Citigroup and Gannett (Monday); Coca-Cola, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, Intel and Yahoo (Tuesday); Abbott Laboratories, Bank of America, Honeywell International and I.B.M. (Wednesday); Morgan Stanley, Google, Microsoft and Verizon (Thursday); and General Electric and Xerox (Friday).
IN THE UNITED STATES On Monday, the International Monetary Fund will release updates to its global economic forecasts.
On Tuesday, a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee will conduct a hearing on money laundering and terrorist financing, with a focus on HSBC. Also on Tuesday, Ben S. Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, will testify before the Senate Banking Committee; and Gary Gensler, the chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, will testify before the Senate Agriculture Committee on the effect of the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul law.
On Wednesday, Mr. Bernanke will testify before the House Financial Services Committee; and the House Small Business Committee will hold a hearing on expanding broadband access to small businesses.
On Thursday, the House Ways and Means Committee will conduct a hearing on how the tax system affects manufacturers.
OVERSEAS On Monday, Adair Turner, chairman of Britain’s Financial Services Authority, and Jerry del Missier, former chief operating officer of Barclays, will testify before a parliamentary committee about rate-rigging.
