The Handymax ships (up to 50000 tons) usually have self loading cranes etc because they often visit small ports without loading equipment.
The Panamax class (60000-80000 tons) like this 80000 ton ship rarely have self loading equipment because they dont visit the small ports-they only visit ports which have their own loading equipment.
Also small ports often dont have the draft necessary to support a Panamax.
Until recently 40 foot was the definition of a deepwater port and max depth for even most large ports-nothing in New England over 40 ft I dont think. Panamax btw draft was limited to 12.02 meters (ca 40 ft) until recently when they raised the limiting lake a foot or 2
In some ways Ensenada seems like a small port but its 47 foot depth after dredging Dec 2010-Jan 2011 was very impressive-San Francisco is only 30 feet, the deepest on the west coast last I Iooked was 53 feet.
The second ship Loreto Aug 2011 was limited to 36002 tons because it had to sail up a Chinese river w a limited draft prior to Bao.
We first saw pics of Bao leaders at CWRN mine ca Sept 17 2011 and ever since Bao has been the main customer for iron ore.
Bao obviously has impressive facilities on its end so no limitations there.
