Covanta operates the Lee County Resource Recovery Facility located in Ft. Myers on behalf of the owner, Lee County, FL, host of the 2013 NAWTEC proceedings. The Energy-from-Waste facility is the centerpiece of the county's sustainable solid-waste management system and generates up to 57 megawatts of clean, renewable energy -- enough to power about 35,000 homes and businesses.
Covanta is celebrating its fifth anniversary of its Clean World Initiative (CWI), which brings sustainability to every facet of the company's business, including facility operations, research and development, the advancement of solid waste management and community partnerships and programs. A particular area of success under CWI has been emissions reductions. Over the past five years, Covanta has successfully cut emissions of dioxin, mercury and hydrogen chloride emissions in half, and when aggregating "all" emissions, Covanta's emissions are 75 percent below the Environmental Protection Agency's requirements.
Covanta remains an integral part of the zero-landfill solution . The company has expanded its range of services to help companies meet zero-landfill goals, including its recycling programs that help reduce natural resource use, energy needs, greenhouse gas emissions and secondary solid waste and waste water discharges.
Covanta facilities are also significant recyclers of metal, annually recovering approximately 415,000 tons of ferrous metal and over 16,000 tons non-ferrous metals -- the equivalent amount of steel and aluminum needed to build five Golden Gate Bridges and produce over one billion aluminum beverage cans.
Recovering energy from waste after efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle is a critical component of managing residual waste. According to the U.S. EPA, for every ton of municipal solid waste processed at Energy-from-Waste facilities, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by the equivalent of approximately one ton less of carbon dioxide emissions. This is possible due to the avoidance of methane from landfills (a potent greenhouse gas), the offset of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel electrical production, and the recovery of metals for recycling.
