Calix Adds EXA Powered E3-48C to Sealed Ethernet Service Access Node Family

MINNEAPOLIS, MN--(Marketwired - Apr 16, 2013) - Calix, Inc. ( NYSE : CALX ) today announced the introduction of the Ethernet eXtensible Architecture (EXA) Powered E3-48C sealed Ethernet Service Access Node (ESAN) to the Unified Access portfolio. The newest addition to the E3 family of sealed ESANs , the E3-48C brings a new level of flexibility to communications service providers seeking to deliver advanced broadband services over existing copper infrastructure and drive business transformation. The new addition supports up to 48 ports of "combo" VDSL2 and POTS services in a compact, hardened, and sealed form factor, simplifying network transformation by eliminating the need for overlay of legacy digital loop carrier (DLC) voice services. Ready for the emerging advanced broadband services of today and tomorrow, the E3-48C offers multiple high-capacity uplinks and the ability to support both bonding and vectoring. It also offers extraordinary flexibility in pushing advanced services deeper into the network, with support for a wide variety of deployment topologies -- including fiber-efficient rings, point-to-point, and daisy-chain -- as well as AC, DC, and remote powering options.

"Even though we've been able to make the case for pulling fiber all the way to the home in some parts of our network, there are other areas where leveraging VDSL2 is just good business," said Steve Long, vice president of outside plant and engineering at Atlantic Telephone Membership Corporation (ATMC) in Shallotte, NC. "We've analyzed the whole spectrum of broadband plant enhancement options, and we've found that the Calix E3-48C sealed ESAN offers a powerful and efficient solution for service providers like us to snap into existing 10GE networks, reduce loop lengths, and enable advanced broadband services delivery to subscribers today, while also offering the option for bandwidth enhancement technologies like bonding and vectoring in the future. The beauty is that whatever path we choose to take toward network and business transformation over copper and fiber, Calix has us covered."

Additional E3-48C advantages include:

  • Two 10GE/1GE uplinks and three GE/2.5GE uplinks with 802.1w rapid spanning tree protocol (RSTP) and 802.3ad link aggregation
  • RSTP ring support
  • Layer 2 switching and forwarding for deployment simplicity and Layer 3 awareness for scalability and security
  • Combo VDSL2 and POTS services for OPEX efficient upgrade of legacy DLC POTS
  • The ability to support vectoring
  • Integrated Internet group management protocol (IGMP) v2 and v3 snooping and proxy for IPTV
  • Dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) relay and snooping for facilitated network security
  • Service prioritization via IEEE 802.1Q virtual local access networks (VLANs) and 802.1p support
  • Support for multiple service delivery models, including VLAN per service, VLAN per port, or hybrid
  • Integration with the Calix Management System (CMS) for complete network visibility and management

"Service providers across North America are seeking to meet the emerging broadband demands of subscribers while balancing the economic realities of deployment," said John Colvin, Calix senior vice president of North America sales and marketing. "With the addition of the E3-48C to the E3 family of sealed access nodes, the industry's broadest portfolio of flexible access systems both copper and fiber has now expanded, bringing new opportunities for network and business transformation to service providers worldwide."

To see the E3-48C in action along with the rest of the Calix Unified Access portfolio, visit Calix in Booths 302/304 at the IP Possibilities Show, April 15-18 at the Hyatt Regency and DoubleTree Suites in Minneapolis, MN.
