What Happened?
Shares of genetic testing company Natera (NASDAQ:NTRA) jumped 2.4% in the afternoon session after the company announced that incorporating phased and structural variants enables ctDNA detection significantly below 1 part per 10 million, elevating molecular residual disease sensitivity ahead of the 2026 ESMO Annual Congress.
The company and its partners scheduled the presentation of 20 abstracts at the congress to demonstrate clinical utility across its oncology portfolio. Among the studies, the ICONIC trial showed cancer recurrence detection with a lead time greater than 7.3 months over imaging. In addition, the SAGITTARIUS trial demonstrated treatment de-escalation for 87% of colon cancer patients whose care plans were modified based on molecular residual disease negative results.
After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $401.75, up 2.1% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Natera’s shares are quite volatile and have had 18 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 10 days ago when the stock gained 1.7% on the news that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted Breakthrough Device designation to its blood-based multi-cancer early detection assay. The regulatory decision followed the agency's evaluation of performance data spanning 12 cancer types. The evaluation assessed the assay's sensitivity, specificity, and cancer signal origin performance.
The FDA Breakthrough Devices Program is designed to expedite the development and review of medical devices that diagnose or treat life-threatening conditions. In diagnostic testing, sensitivity reflects how accurately a test detects positive cases, while specificity measures its ability to identify negative results. Cancer signal origin evaluates the test's ability to pinpoint the tissue or organ where cancer originated.
Natera is up 75.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $401.75 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $425.64 from October 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Natera’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $3,533.
