Peraso Inc. Targets Growing Defence Opportunity with Secure 60 GHz Millimeter Wave Technology

https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/articles...12054.html

Modern defence systems increasingly depend on the ability to move large volumes of data quickly, securely and reliably. As military platforms become more connected and autonomous, the demand for resilient communications links is creating new opportunities for technologies designed to operate in challenging and contested environments.

For Peraso Inc. (NASDAQ RSO), this represents an important potential growth opportunity as the company applies its expertise in 60 GHz millimeter wave technology to defence, UAV and autonomous systems.

Speaking in a recent Watch List interview, Ron Glibbery, CEO of Peraso Inc., highlighted the company's directional antenna technology and its potential to provide highly resilient wireless communications in environments where conventional radio systems can be vulnerable to interference and jamming.

A Technology Designed for Resilient Communications

At the heart of Peraso's proposition is its millimeter wave technology and the use of highly directional antennas.

According to Glibbery, the directional nature of the company's technology makes communications significantly more difficult to jam. When combined with established anti-jamming approaches such as frequency hopping and spread-spectrum techniques, Peraso believes its technology can provide a highly resilient communications solution across a range of military platforms.

This could be particularly relevant as defence forces increasingly deploy UAVs, autonomous vehicles and other connected systems that require secure, low-latency data links.

Importantly, the potential application is not limited to airborne platforms.

As Glibbery explained, Peraso's technology can potentially address secure communications across UAVs, aircraft, ground vehicles and naval platforms, giving the company exposure to a broad section of the military communications market.

PRM 2145 Opens Further Opportunities

Peraso's PRM 2145 communications module is central to the company's efforts to expand its technology into these emerging applications.

The module is designed around the company's 60 GHz millimeter wave capabilities, providing a potential building block for high-speed wireless communications across next-generation platforms.

The opportunity is particularly compelling in applications where traditional communications technologies can face congestion, interference or deliberate jamming.

For UAV operators, for example, maintaining a reliable communications connection can be critical. Drones are increasingly being used for surveillance, intelligence gathering and other battlefield applications, while autonomous systems are demanding ever-greater amounts of real-time data.

A communications technology capable of delivering high-speed connectivity while making it considerably harder for an adversary to disrupt the link could therefore have significant strategic value.

Ukraine and the Middle East Highlight Potential Near-Term Markets

Peraso is already looking at opportunities to deploy its technology into real-world defence applications.

Glibbery highlighted Ukraine as one area where the company sees a potentially significant near-term opportunity, with Peraso engaging with drone companies exploring the use of its technology to provide resilient wireless connectivity.

The company is also looking at opportunities in the Middle East.

One application discussed by Glibbery involves the use of high-altitude drones and Peraso's technology to support so-called "friendly fire" prevention, helping identify targets and distinguish them from friendly forces.

These applications demonstrate the breadth of potential use cases for Peraso's technology and highlight how secure communications are becoming increasingly important as military operations become more dependent on connected and autonomous platforms.

From Fixed Wireless Access to Defence

Peraso has historically focused on the fixed wireless access market, building expertise in high-frequency millimeter wave communications.

The company's move towards defence therefore represents an opportunity to leverage existing technology and intellectual property into a potentially higher-value and strategically important market.

Glibbery believes the military sector could become a particularly strong opportunity for Peraso over the next 18 months, with UAVs representing an attractive initial market because of the significant volumes involved.

The potential is not restricted to drones, however. Peraso's technology could potentially support communications between air, land and maritime platforms, creating multiple avenues for future adoption.

A Potentially Significant Growth Market

The defence communications landscape is changing rapidly.

The increasing use of autonomous systems, drones and networked military platforms is driving demand for communications infrastructure capable of operating reliably in contested environments. At the same time, the importance of secure, low-latency data transmission continues to increase as platforms become more sophisticated.

For Peraso, its existing millimeter wave expertise provides a foundation from which it can pursue these emerging opportunities.

The company's directional antenna technology, combined with its PRM 2145 communications module and anti-jamming capabilities, gives it a differentiated proposition as it targets defence and autonomous systems.

With opportunities being pursued in markets including Ukraine and the Middle East, the next 12 to 18 months could prove an important period for Peraso as it seeks to translate its technology into additional defence deployments.

For investors, the attraction is the potential for Peraso to expand beyond its traditional fixed wireless access market and establish a presence in the rapidly developing defence, UAV and autonomous communications sectors.

If the company can convert its current opportunities into commercial deployments, the defence market could become an increasingly important component of Peraso's growth story.
