Transporter proteins allow the medication to get in and out of tissues. In cancer, P-gp is the primary transporter that has caused several therapeutic challenges. This protein is also known as the Multi-Drug Resistance Protein or MRP1. It is because it pumps the drugs out of the tumor cells before the drug can work [157]. These proteins can be overexpressed during oncological drug therapy and can cause tolerance and resistance to the drug therapy. If patients are already predisposed because of their genetics to having a higher level of P-gp, then it can cause a treatment to become ineffective.
