Any drug company should want to own a platform drug capable of addressing so many indications, regardless of if they own an ICI or not.
Right now there might very well be a game of chicken of sorts going on in the BP world. Wait for full confirmation of the drug's capabilities in January at the ASCO GI conference? *BUZZER* You lose sucka. More likely, someone's going to take that (small) gamble to move boldly ahead and get their hands on the IP before then. How soon? Well, as others have stated, you mitigate risk by putting down a nice fattie of $XXXM ahead of full data disclosure with a bunch of contingencies on the back end, fully addressing what the end game criteria and BO price will be. Folks are watching the data roll in in real time under NDA, and likely are trying to game the best scenario for a take out strategy/price/contingencies, and my guess is it happens before we know when the data is disclosed in January.
