Q: Can you explain what you meant by using carbon credits to help monetize RITE’s tailings assets?
A: Carbon credits can provide an additional pathway for monetizing tailings projects by capturing the environmental value created through remediation and resource recovery.
When metals are recovered from previously mined materials—such as tailings—rather than extracted through new primary mining operations, significant energy-intensive activities can often be avoided. Traditional mining typically requires drilling, blasting, hauling, crushing, and processing large volumes of new ore, all of which contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions. Recovering metals from previously processed materials can substantially reduce the emissions associated with producing those metals.
Under recognized carbon accounting methodologies, this reduction in emissions (avoided emissions) can sometimes be measured and verified through lifecycle analysis and third-party validation. When verified under an approved carbon registry, the quantified emissions reductions may be issued as carbon avoidance credits (CAC’s).
These carbon avoidance credits represent tradable environmental assets that can be sold within voluntary carbon markets to companies seeking to offset or reduce their carbon footprints as part of their sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) commitments.
For projects such as RITE’s tailings recovery initiatives, this creates the potential for dual monetization of the same asset base:
1. Primary value from the recovery and sale of precious metals contained within the tailings; and
2. Secondary value from the verified environmental benefits associated with recycling and remediation activities.
RITE intends to pursue the development, verification, and potential monetization of carbon credits where project characteristics and applicable methodologies support such issuance. This approach allows the Company to capture economic value from both the resource recovery and the measurable environmental improvements associated with its remediation activities.
