EV Sales in China Set New Record in October

Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) has revealed that China sold 1.7 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in October, setting a new monthly record for the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.

EV makers like BYD and Nio surpassed September sales by roughly 111,000 units, with year-over-year growth hitting 20 percent compared to October 2024. The figure includes exports, which totaled 256,000 vehicles, leaving about 1.5 million for the domestic market.

Most of the growth was spurred by increased battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales. Pure electric sales reached 1.1 million units, up 32% from last year, outpacing the broader new energy vehicle (NEV) category significantly. Nearly a million BEVs were sold domestically while 166,000 units were exported to foreign markets. Plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, barely moved as Chinese carmakers sold 605,000 plug-ins in October, just 3% above last year.

In contrast, plug-in hybrids were China’s fastest-growing NEV segment in 2024 with 89% gains while battery-electrics grew by 30%. Now those positions have reversed. Battery electric vehicle sales grew from slightly over 842,000 last year to more than 1.1 million cars in 2025 whereas plug in hybrid sales basically remained stable.

Cumulatively, electric and hybrid vehicles crossed the 50 percent market share threshold for the first time ever in October 2025. Based on wholesale figures, NEVs represented 51.4 percent of all passenger vehicles sold in October, while overall vehicle sales hit 3.3 million units, a 9% year-over-year increase.

BYD remains the best-selling EV maker in China but posted mixed results in October. Although the 442,000 vehicles BYD sold in October represents its best performance this year, the numbers are still below the 500,000 monthly levels it achieved in 2024. Battery-electric sales climbed 17 percent while plug-in hybrids dropped 31 percent, marking the sixth straight month of plug-in declines for BYD.

Tesla, BYD’s main competitor in the Chinese EV market, stumbled after a strong September, falling from 90,812 units to 61,497 in October as domestic demand for its six-seat long-wheelbase Model Y apparently weakened.

Leapmotor hit 70,289 units sold for its sixth consecutive monthly record, up 84 percent year-over-year. Xiaomi sold 48,654 vehicles in October, marking its second month of over 40,000 sold units, putting the smartphone maker on track to hit its 350,000 annual target early. Xpeng delivered 42,013 units, up 76 percent, while Nio crossed 40,000 deliveries for the first time. Surprisingly, the Nio’s mid-range Onvo brand actually outsold the flagship Nio brand by nearly 200 units.

Geely’s Galaxy brand doubled sales to 127,476 units and surpassed one million total deliveries for 2025. Premium brand Voyah reached 17,000 vehicles, increasing by 69.5% year-over-year while Li Auto, formerly a hybrid specialist, posted 32,000 October sales, down 38 percent from last year in its fourth consecutive month of declines. Beijing Electric Vehicle Co (BJEV), BAIC’s EV subsidiary, doubled sales to 30,500 units with particularly strong performance from its Arcfox and Stelato brands.

American automakers like Bollinger Innovations, Inc. (OTC: BINI) have a steep climb ahead of them to record the kind of sales that their Chinese counterparts are notching in the race to dominate the EV industry.
