Chinese Hypercar Sets New EV Speed Record in Germany

An electric hypercar developed in China recently became the fastest production vehicle in the world when it nearly hit 500 km/h in speed tests at a German facility. Built by the luxury sub-brand of Chinese EV giant BYD, Yangwang, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme shattered previous production vehicle speed records for both electric and gas-powered cars, reaching a staggering 496.22 km/h at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg track on 14 September.

The record test run was conducted by German racing specialist Marc Basseng, breaking the previous speed record set by German test driver Andy Wallace in 2019 at the Ehra-Lessien facility in a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ which reached 490.48 km/h. While the limited-edition Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ was gas-powered, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme hypercar is fully electric, making the recent achievement a major milestone for electric vehicle technology.

The BYD-built electric hypercar can produce over 3,000 horsepower from four electric motors and a powerful 1,200-volt electric system, a configuration that offers more than double the voltage available in standard EVs, which usually have 400-volt systems.

In addition to its robust propulsion system, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme incorporates advanced features such as ultra-thin super silicon motors that can each spin at 30,000 rpm, track-specific semi-slick tires, a lithium iron phosphate Blade battery for energy, and modified DiSus-X suspension that ensures vehicle stability at very high speeds.

As the largest electric vehicle company in China and Tesla’s main competitor on the global stage, BYD was well positioned to develop a vehicle as extreme as the Yangwang U9 Xtreme. Leveraging the expertise gained during its expansion into electric vehicle development as well as its robust EV supply chain, BYD has built an electric hypercar that can challenge and even surpass the most powerful vehicles in the world.

With the Chinese EV now claiming the top spot as the fastest production vehicle globally, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ takes second place, followed by the SSC Tuatara and the Koenigsegg Agera.

The fact that the Yangwang U9 Xtreme is electric was instrumental in breaking the speed record for production vehicles. Its electric motors can generate and deliver instant torque without experiencing the power interruptions typically observed in combustion-engine vehicles, giving the hypercar smoother acceleration and eliminating gear changes that can disrupt power flow when the vehicle reaches high speeds.

In a sense, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme and its speed record represent the culmination of advancements in electric mobility: aerodynamics, motor efficiency, and battery technology all working together to deliver extreme speed.

Without the engine noise and mechanical vibrations typical of combustion-engine vehicles, drivers face fewer distractions and can maintain focus better during high-speed tests. Furthermore, it also shows that China’s electric vehicle industry has the technological capability and expertise to become a leading force in the global EV market.

Advanced battery-technology is undoubtedly going to play a pivotal role in the vehicles of the future, and companies like PowerBank Corporation (NASDAQ: SUUN) (Cboe CA: SUNN) (FRA: 103) are probably working behind the scenes to play a role in this technology.
