Biel is on to something HUGE.
VNS literally affects everything..
The vagus nerve, also known as cranial nerve X, is the longest cranial nerve and plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions. It's a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for functions like heart rate, digestion, and mood regulation. It also controls reflexes such as coughing, swallowing, and sneezing.
Key functions of the vagus nerve:
Autonomic nervous system regulation:
The vagus nerve is a major player in the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for "rest and digest" functions, counteracting the "fight or flight" response of the sympathetic nervous system.
Heart rate and blood pressure:
The vagus nerve helps regulate heart rate and blood pressure by sending signals to the heart.
Digestion:
It influences gut motility, including peristalsis, the process that moves food through the digestive tract.
Respiratory rate:
The vagus nerve plays a role in regulating breathing rate.
Mood regulation:
It influences mood and emotional responses.
Reflexes:
It controls reflexes like coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and even vomiting.
Immune response:
The vagus nerve is involved in the body's immune response and inflammation regulation.
Sensory input:
It receives sensory information from various organs and tissues, including the throat, larynx, heart, lungs, and digestive tract.
Motor control:
It provides motor control to muscles in the pharynx, larynx, and upper esophagus, which are involved in swallowing and vocalization.
Gut-brain axis:
The vagus nerve plays a role in communication between the gut and the brain, influencing conditions like obesity and depression.
In essence, the vagus nerve acts as a communication superhighway, connecting the brain to numerous organs and influencing a wide range of vital functions for overall health and well-being.
