White Hydrogen Offers Additional Option in Energy Transition
As the world seeks solutions that will enable it to transition from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives, white hydrogen could provide an additional low-carbon option in the green energy transition. Also referred to as geologic or natural hydrogen, white hydrogen is naturally occurring hydrogen that forms through natural processes. Green hydrogen, on the other hand, is produced using energy-intensive processes such as electrolysis, while blue hydrogen needs carbon capture, another energy-intensive process.
Since it forms naturally with no human input, white hydrogen has been gaining popularity as an alternative source of clean energy. This source of energy could be extracted from naturally forming underground deposits with little emissions and deployed where it is needed. Compared to green and blue hydrogen, white hydrogen is a much more efficient and affordable alternative that occurs naturally without human intervention or financial investment.

A joint research program involving the Colorado School of Mines, the U.S. Geological Survey, and several large energy companies is currently studying geologic hydrogen formations while several companies have either raised funds for or begun exploring for white hydrogen deposits.
Although still in its early stages, white hydrogen’s unique combination of natural abundance, low emissions, and affordability makes it an increasingly viable part of the world’s energy future. As research and commercial interest accelerate, this naturally occurring gas could help ease the shift to clean energy and offer a practical solution to some of the challenges facing full-scale renewable adoption.
