Within the next five years, the number of eco-certified loggers in the Amazon could rise to 50, from the current four, and account for up to 40% of timber cut, predicts Brazil's forest certification body, the Instituto de Manejo e Certificacao Florestal e Agricula. Fifteen companies aim to be certified in 2002 alone, says Tasso Azevedo, a forest engineer at the agency.
If all 15 pending requests are approved, as much as 10% of the 27.8 million cubic meters of Amazon timber cut each year soon could meet the eco-test. Currently, only 1% of Brazilian hardwoods are certified. At least half of the 15 are expected to make the 2002 cut. "The growing demand for certified wood in Europe will cause the number of lumber operations in the Amazon seeking and receiving certification to mushroom over the next five years," predicts Azevedo......http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Cutting+edge%3a+Brazil's+Amazon+loggers--aiming+for+green+markets--tilt...-a085236761......And north cal wood is certified......All North Cal woods are certified either "Recycled" or "100%" according to standards of the Forest
