How EVs Are Driving a Revolution in Automotive Design

Electric vehicles, or EVs, are not just changing how we drive; they are changing how cars are built and look. The shift from gas-powered engines to electric motors has opened up a world of new ideas for designers and engineers. Without the need for bulky engines or exhaust systems, car makers are rethinking every part of the vehicle.

One of the biggest changes is the use of the “skateboard chassis.” This is a flat platform that holds the battery and electric motors. It’s like a base that different types of cars, like sedans, pickups, or SUVs, can be built on. Because of this, manufacturers can now create many kinds of vehicles using the same basic structure. It also means designers have more freedom to play with the car’s shape and features.

Another big change is inside the car. With electric systems replacing old mechanical parts, the interiors are becoming more spacious and flexible. For example, new EVs use steer-by-wire technology, which removes the traditional steering column. This allows for new steering designs like rectangular wheels or yokes. In some models, the steering parts can even hide away when the car is driving itself. Brake and throttle controls are also going digital, giving designers more room to move things around.

Technology is now the brain of the vehicle. Cars are becoming software-defined, meaning they rely more on computer systems than on mechanical ones. Features like automatic braking, lane keeping, and even driving modes can now be added or updated with a software download. Some luxury EVs let drivers change how their car feels and sounds just by installing updates.

This software focus has also brought new companies into the car business. Tech firms and startups can now design EVs without needing to build engines from scratch. For example, some companies use ready-made platforms and simply add their own body and features. One startup is even working on a low-cost truck that can turn into an SUV by switching out parts.

Around the world, countries are showing different styles of EV design. In Europe, small and simple EVs are popular in cities. In China, there’s a wide mix of tiny budget cars and futuristic luxury models. And in the U.S., bold designs like the Tesla Cybertruck are gaining attention.

Overall, EVs are giving the auto industry a fresh start. With new shapes, smarter systems, and more creative ideas, electric cars are driving a true revolution in how vehicles are made and experienced. We can only watch and wait for what new EV designs and features startups like Mullen Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: MULN) will unveil in the models they release as the years go by.
