Effect more than the anchor...many since the 60s immigrated...many didn't complete citizenship process and just lived off the anchor until amnesty.

Only 160 million In the US in 1960. Many of them were immigrants from wwI and wwII...
If we ask the question of sovereign US citizens...there might only be 75 million in the US.
