Climate and Weather Services are Vital to Clean En
Post# of 57
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says weather and climate services will be integral to the global transition to green energy. Joining the rest of the United Nations (UN) community to celebrate the International Day of Clean Energy on Sunday, 26th January, the organization stressed the importance of equal access to dependable, affordable, and modern sustainable energy.
With the effects of climate change becoming more pronounced every year, it is critical that nations rid themselves of fossil fuels and incorporate clean energy into their energy mixes. Solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, green hydrogen, and other renewable alternatives to fossil fuels will be critical to helping the globe achieve its carbon neutrality goals and start mitigating climate change.
However, WMO notes that around 685 million people still do not have access to reliable energy, a factor that’s impacting health, economic development, and education. WMO stated its commitment to aiding the green transition by supporting the delivery of tailored climate and weather services.
According to the meteorological organization, this is because weather and climate are closely linked to green energy resources and can affect solar, hydropower, and wind capacity. Climate change also affects cooling and heating needs, which can, in turn, significantly affect energy demand and supply. In the U.S., for instance, air conditioning accounts for 12% of the average household’s electricity.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres says green energy is projected to surpass coal as the most dominant source of electricity in 2025. Renewable energy prices have also dropped significantly over the past decade, making renewable energy as cheap or even cheaper than fossil fuels in some cases.
Guterres also noted that even though the renewable energy segment has come a long way, governments and stakeholders should know the challenges they will face as the green transition advances. There is a shortage of skilled green energy workers that may get worse as the industry gets larger, and the green transition risks being uneven due to an unequal distribution of renewable energy investment.
Even so, the UN Secretary-General says that 2025 offers the chance for nations to align their national development and energy strategies with their climate goals. The International Day of Clean Energy called attention to the role renewable energy could play in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and providing reliable green energy to the 685 million people worldwide who don’t have access to dependable sources of power.
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo noted that forces of nature such as wind, water, and sunlight cycles power green energy. The WMO will use its 75-year history of monitoring and forecasting these cycles to provide the science-driven data that will be critical to strengthening energy resilience and opening the door to sustainable development and economic opportunities.
The energy and water solutions being provided by numerous entities like Energy and Water Development Corp. (OTCQB: EAWD) will be critical to ensuring that the devastating effects of climate change don’t affect a lot more people than they are currently impacting.
