Illinois Governor Supports Bill Seeking to Regulat
Post# of 128
Last week, Illinois governor JB Pritzker announced that he supported the creation of new regulations to reel in the state’s burgeoning hemp industry. Speaking at a news conference in Chicago, the governor explained that in the time since both federal and state governments legalized the production of this crop, a new industry in which chemicals are extracted from hemp plants to produce intoxicating and possibly dangerous products that were unregulated had emerged.
Pritzker added that the intoxicating hemp industry was selling products derived from hemp like delta-8 to minors through the use of deceptive ad tactics. He noted that these products were unregulated and untested, which made them even more dangerous for the general public.
Legislators in the state approved legislation in 2018 to permit hemp’s commercial production, which was the same year Congress federally legalized hemp. The measure legalizing the crop was focused on using it to make rope, textiles, and other products as well as the production of CBD oils that could be extracted from the plant. These oils and their products are said to have a number of health benefits.
As the popularity of intoxicating hemp products grows, legislators have called attention to the need for additional regulation. This explains why the original language of HB 4293, which focused on regulating massage therapists, was changed to include language regulating intoxicating products derived from hemp.
While the measure will not ban the products from being sold, it would impose a limit on the amount of THC each product can contain. The measure would also regulate how these intoxicating products can be advertised and marketed. This is in addition to limiting the sale and manufacture of these products to licensed businesses.
The amended measure was approved by the Senate earlier in May, before being advanced to the House, where it has remained since.
The call to impose new limits on the sale and production of intoxicating hemp comes as the state’s agriculture department develops new rules that’ll allow the state’s industry to comply with new federal laws.
These rules were approved by the legislative Joint Committee on Administrative Rules last week following significant negotiations with the Illinois Hemp Business Association. In a statement, the association revealed that it was satisfied with the final version of these regulations but had some concerns about the new legislation on hemp.
The association argued that the new legislation threatened the industry by possibly banning components of the hemp plant that were beneficial.
While established enterprises like Software Effective Solutions Corp. (d/b/a MedCana) (OTC: SFWJ) from around the country welcome efforts to provide a regulatory framework for the hemp industry in different jurisdictions, they wish that such regulations don’t come at the expense of stifling growth within the industry.
