Example: You got the sniffles and figure out you have a cold. Sniffles = symptom; Cold = root cause. But what is the root cause of the cold?
First let's look at the facts:
1.) Almost all startups dilute shareholders
2.) Some startups dilute for 20 years (e.g. Salesforce)
3.) Some 'mature' companies continue to dilute...
Boeing Co., which is over 100 years old, raised $21.1 billion in an expanded share sale, one of the largest ever by a public company, shoring up its balance sheet as it seeks to stave off a potential credit rating downgrade to junk.
So is dilution really a surprise?
I believe the real root cause is...
I.) VERB has done a number of 'pivots' over the years
II.) Each 'pivot' is like starting from scratch again, needing more capital
III.) Each 'pivot' substantially delayed producing significant revenue.
IV.) The company, like many startups, has a history of coming under attack which significant raised the cost of obtaining capital by a factor of X
While some of #I - #III is to be expected, it was way, way, way more than anyone expected. Throw in a pandemic too which knocked a lot of business out.
I do think it's IV that truly hurt the company and I don't even think by a factor of 4. My guess would be by a factor of 10-100 if not more.
BTW: Boeing down 23% in the last year and down 57% over the last 5, but up 18,000% in the last 62 years. Can't wait 62 years for VERB though.
