This song brings back so much mixed emotions for me. Great song, rock at its best. But I served in US Army 1966-1968 and was very active in anti-war movement; the insanity then captured in this song hurt so deep…. And so much anger. I am 77 years old now, same emotions. I am glad Stones captured the mood and raw emotions.

Combat veteran, 2nd & 75th Rangers Ft. Lewis served 24 years 6 total tours of duty in middle east. I've been retired a bit now but miss the military lifestyle to this day. I only retired because my wife of 42 years asked me too. I suffer from PTSD and social anxiety, I've been shot twice a few broken bones but I'd do it all over again because I love this country so F ing much! I don't like how the country currently sits but America is strong and resilient, it will be here long after we're all gone, guaranteed! To all you gets out there my hats off to you and I appreciate your service. To those still serving thank you from bottom of sn aging Rangers heart . I think of you all everyday!

This gives me the clearest memory of being in my friend's bedroom. I'd just bought the album and we were listening to it on her record player. Both our boyfriends were in Vietnam, her's in the army, mine in the marines. My cousin's boyfriend had just gotten home from Nam. Our friend's husband had just been killed there. The start of Gimme Shelter conjures up an emotion that's burned in my brain forever... the charmed exuberance of our carefree youth overshadowed by the constant specter of death. That war was about keeping your buddies alive. Nobody really cared about ideology once they were in country.
