Study Shows Autism More Prevalent in Kids Living i

Cases of neurodevelopmental disorders have increased globally in the last couple of years, with countries such as Italy observing a significant increase in cases of autism, noting that the disorder is more than four times higher in males than females. affects how individuals interact with others, as well as how they behave, learn and communicate. This disorder is said to have multifactorial origins, with recognized environmental and genetic triggers.
Researchers posit that the period between fetal life through early childhood is the most vulnerable time for neurodevelopmental disorders. They argue that during this period, exposure to neurotoxic chemicals, be it in minimal or high doses that have no adverse effects in grownups, may get in the way of ongoing neurological development, causing permanent damage to the brain.
A recently conducted study examined the prevalence of autism in Italy’s Taranto Province. The researchers’ objective was to determine whether living in a congested area increased the likelihood of developing autism. Morbidity/mortality excesses were identified in individuals living in/near the industrial area, for some pathologies including respiratory, cardiovascular and cancer illnesses.
For their study, the researchers focused on the pair of polluted municipalities of Statte and Taranto, then compared their findings with nonindustrial and less-polluted municipalities in the same province.
Taranto is downwind from the industrial area, which increases risks factor for human health. It’s been shown that pollutants released into the environment from the production of steel, especially on windy days, affect this municipality. This province is the largest single-site integrated steel plant in Europe, with the aforementioned regions being classified as high environment-risk areas due to a number of polluting sources.
The study began with researchers identifying 344 adolescents and children aged between 6 and 18 who suffered from autism spectrum disorder. Its control group was made up of 299 children aged 6 to 11.
The researchers discovered that the overall prevalence of autism was 4.89 per a thousand children, with a considerable drop in the 12- to 18-year group and higher values in the 6- to 11-year group. They also observed that out of the study population diagnosed with ASD, 53 children were female and 291 children were male, with a female:male ratio of 1:5.
In their report, the researchers explained that increasing scientific evidence had linked autism to environmental exposures. They added that the steel plant’s emissions included heavy metals and endocrine disruptors, which has been recognized as playing a role in autism development.
The researchers’ findings add to data on how heavy industrial pollution is a challenge for children and needs to be treated as a public-health priority.
The insights from this study could give public-health experts suggestions on which areas need more consignments of the ASD treatments developed by entities such as PaxMedica Inc. (OTC: PXMD), given the resource constraints authorities face and the need to optimize value from what is available as preventive efforts are also implemented.
