Web3 Helping to Revolutionize Access to Water in I
Post# of 119
For millions of people in rural India, obtaining clean water has been a significant problem for some time, despite the country’s rapid urbanization and advancements. Traditional means of water catchment and management have proven unreliable, leaving underserved communities facing severe water scarcity. However, this problem is being mitigated, thanks to Web3’s innovative solutions.
Many may wonder what Web3 has to do with water. Built on decentralized technology, Web3 creates new economic opportunities and revolutionizes how people can access clean water.
The Crypto Council for Innovation recently highlighted how Web3 is changing many people’s lives in rural India through a case study. Research shows that much of India’s population survives on groundwater, which is running out. If no proper action is taken, many people will suffer. Web3 solutions are ensuring that everyone can access clean water at all times.
According to the case study report, Mercy Corps Ventures partnered with Atlantis DAO to develop a decentralized peer-to-peer water network for struggling communities to access clean-water resources and improve water collection efficiency. Furthermore, this decentralized solution provided communities an easier way to earn a living through incentives, as local entrepreneurs can set up water ATMs or delivery services and receive payment directly through the cryptocurrency network.
Through the DAO platform, communities use cryptocurrency to pay for water delivery services, which are then transparently tracked and recorded on the blockchain. This not only ensures fair and equitable distribution but also creates an incentive for service providers to deliver clean water. The platform also introduced a mobile app whose interface and functionality were designed to effectively engage rural smartphone users, simplifying the complexities of managing water resources through traditional means.
Users can centralize the coordination and compensation for evaluating, producing and distributing clean water in one unified platform.
According to the report, since the project was launched, it has engaged with 3,859 individuals and served about 45,000 community members. More than 80% of the participants in the project have benefited significantly. Communities can now access clean water, informal job opportunities have been created and community cooperation has improved. Of the 440 informal jobs, 30% are held by women, which signifies the promotion of gender equality in the employment sector within the community.
One of the key benefits of decentralized web solutions is increased transparency and accountability in bringing water access and delivery to rural communities. Users can record all their transactions and water usage on the blockchain, allowing for tamper-proof records that the community can access and verify.
This use of Web3 to help ease access to water in rural areas is just one of the use cases of this new technology. Other companies, such as NextPlat Corp. (NASDAQ: NXPL) (NASDAQ: NXPLW), are leveraging the technology for other purposes, such as bolstering safety and customer engagement on their e-commerce platform.
