It could actually play out much better involving CNN meaning as long as Trump keeps cool people will see but if Trump decides to state that CNN and this type of venue is a bunch of BS then he will toss his potential re-election in the trash barrel.
Trump must act Presidential in order to draw in more voters that are balancing on the fence post in seeing a calm respectful Trump. Yes, CNN or Biden may very well try to set Trump on fire and if the rope a dope works on Trump (I pray NOT) then he hasn't proved to have grown enough for voters to allow him to take charge again.
Let Biden screw himself would be the best act the Trump can do especially since this is the first Debate.
