Commercetools Launches HIPAA-Compliant Innovation
Post# of 119
Earlier this week, commercetools rolled out its new HDS-certified, HIPAA-compliant solution, commercetools for Healthcare, which will allow healthcare companies around the world develop and deliver secure, exceptional commerce experiences for their clients at scale.
In America, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) governs the protection of sensitive patient data. Companies that interact with protected health information are required to have various security measures in place to ensure compliance with HIPAA.
In some circumstances, this bill also applies to international companies. For instance, when a business that operates outside America works with companies that interact with health information of residents in the United States, HIPAA compliance is mandatory.
commercetools believes that its solution is the first to securely process protected health information under a Business Associate Agreement framework. The solution will allow businesses to comply with the regulations while also permitting life sciences and healthcare companies to sell online in both France and the United States. The company believes that its approach will allow healthcare companies to comply with regulations while still providing top security for sensitive data.
commercetools remains focused on creating unique and modern consumer experiences, while also improving efficiency and revenue-generating opportunities for businesses. The recently launched solution was developed on the company’s composable commerce platform. Its features and capabilities include compliance with HIPAA, which is to be ensured via the company’s Business Associate Agreement framework. The company underwent a number of formal external compliance audits and security-risk evaluations to achieve compliance.
commercetools also follows established frameworks such as NIST 800-30 Rev 1 and HITRUST CSF. This is in addition to implementing physical, administrative and technical controls that only allow access to data and the system to those with proper authorization. The company also has all its employees take part in compulsory HDS and HIPAA training, which includes a mandatory test.
Other features of commercetools’ new solution include a premium audit log to log all activities and systems; a dedicated space to store data, providing additional security; and HDS certification, which is a requirement for handling protected health information by French law.
In a statement, commercetool’s chief product officer, Mike Sharp, stated that the company’s newly launched solution was a game changer for healthcare companies and would allow them to gain while keeping sensitive patient data secure and safe.
Companies that have used the commercetool’s composable commerce platform include Vision Healthcare, which unified its tech stack across its offerings and scaled its business across markets.
It remains to be seen how well commercetools’ solution can seamlessly be integrated into healthcare ecommerce platforms such as NextPlat Corp. (NASDAQ: NXPL) (NASDAQ: NXPLW) and other industry actors.
