Well geez, where can I get hold of some quantum dots?

Quantum computers are becoming all the rage on the stock market and the internet. It is a little early but are definitely the future. I assumed that those building quantum computers might need quantum dots. So, I asked co-pilot if quantum computers make use of quantum dots? There are at least 15 companies, big and small, involved in building quantum computers. As they begin to develope commercial quantum computers, they may ask the above question.

my question to co-pilot was: "do quantum compuers make use of quantum dots?"

Yes, quantum computers can indeed utilize quantum dots! These tiny specks of matter, sometimes referred to as “artificial atoms,” play a crucial role in quantum computing. Let me explain how:

What Are Quantum Dots?
Quantum dots are extremely small particles, typically just a few nanometers wide. They’re made from semiconductor materials (such as silicon) and exhibit properties similar to individual atoms.
Due to their small size, the particles inside quantum dots (electrons and holes) are trapped and have well-defined energy levels according to the laws of quantum theory. Think of these energy levels as rungs on a ladder, much like individual atoms1.
How Quantum Dots Work:
When you give an atom energy, you can “excite” it. This means boosting an electron inside the atom to a higher energy level.
When the electron returns to a lower level, the atom emits a photon of light with the same energy it originally absorbed. The color of this emitted light depends on the atom’s properties.
Quantum dots can be precisely controlled to emit light of specific colors. Unlike technologies such as LEDs and LCDs, quantum dots can easily produce light of any color.
In quantum computing, researchers use quantum dots as the basic components in memory chips and logic gates. These tiny islands of confined electric charge can act as interacting artificial atoms, serving as robust quantum bits (qubits)—the fundamental units of information for quantum computers2.
So, in summary, quantum dots are essential for photonic quantum information technology, quantum communication networks, and the development of quantum computers. They allow us to manipulate and control individual particles at the quantum level, opening up exciting possibilities for future technologies!
