Justice Alito Supports A Woman's Right To Choose (To Fly An Insurrectionist Flag)

He won't recuse himself from the Jan. 6 case because his wife is a strong, independent, woman who makes her own decisions about flags.

Justice Sam Alito clearly has exhausted himself trying to find a way out from under the problem of the insurrectionary banners that have flown over the various Alito manses. So he has chosen the path of least resistance and opted for a defiant brand of the usual bullshit. Alito sat himself down and wrote a letter to the Congress telling the world and all the ethical principles of the judicial branch to pound sand. Of course, he still hung the whole thing around his wife's neck. From The New York Times:

In letters to Democratic members of Congress who had demanded his recusal, Justice Alito said that the flags, at his home in Virginia and a beach house in New Jersey, were flown by his wife, Martha-Ann. “My wife is fond of flying flags,” the justice wrote. “I am not. She was solely responsible for having flagpoles put up at our residence and our vacation home and has flown a wide variety of flags over the years.”

So, in addition to being the neighborhood scold, in two neighborhoods, no less, Martha-Ann Alito is attracted to acts of insurrectionary semaphore. However, having done so, Justice Alito moved along in his letter to comedy gold.

“As I said in reference to the other flag event, my wife is an independently minded private citizen. She makes her own decisions, and I honor her right to do so.”

Wait. The author of the Dobbs decision is refusing to recuse himself from obvious conflicts of interest based on honoring his wife's "right" to make her own decisions? No, stop it, Sam. You're killing me here.

“My wife is a private citizen, and she possesses the same First Amendment rights as every other American,” the justice wrote. “She makes her own decisions, and I have always respected her right to do so. She has made many sacrifices to accommodate my service on the Supreme Court,” he wrote, “including the insult of having to endure numerous, loud, obscene and personally insulting protests in front of our home that continue to this day and now threaten to escalate.”

Oh, Jesus H. Christ on a boogie board, will these people ever stop whining about how hard their basic inhumanity has inconvenienced them in the real world? The real world, of course, is filled with people like a 13-year old girl in Mississippi who has come to the attention to the good folks at the Mississippi Free Press.

The closest abortion clinic for a 13-year-old Black girl in Cleveland, Miss., who was raped is 600 miles away in Chicago. Although Mississippi has a near-total abortion ban, pregnant people can get an abortion due to rape or if the pregnancy is causing life-threatening conditions.

But the girl and her mother were unaware of the exception, and the 13-year-old had her baby this summer, Charlotte Alter reported for Time Magazine on Aug. 14. A stranger raped the girl in the yard outside her house in fall 2022, her mother says. They learned she was pregnant on Jan. 11, when she was about 10 weeks along.

Time used pseudonyms for the girl and her mother, calling them Ashley and Regina, to protect the identity of the juvenile rape victim. “I wish she had just told me when it happened. We could have gotten Plan B or something,” Regina told Time, mentioning the emergency contraceptive that can prevent pregnancy up to 72 hours after sex. “That would have been that.”

Punchline.
