Trump Turned Boilerplate FBI Language Into a Tall Tale of an Assassination Plot Against Him

Biden did not try to...Jesus, I can’t believe I’m writing this...he did not send the FBI to kill Trump during the Mar-a-Lago search.

The weather turned in the Commonwealth (God save it!) this week. Herself, who art somewhere, turned the key and summer came to its usual stuttering start. (I will put the snow gear away to celebrate the Fourth of July, as is customary.) The timing was impeccable, because—as dozens of pop songs, good and bad, have taught us—summer is the time for mindless fun, as the news this week has demonstrated.

The MAGA crowd certainly gets it. They took an unremarkable slab of law-enforcement boilerplate and turned it into the biggest assassination plot since the night Brutus and his boyz took out Big Julie down by Pompey’s statue. And some kids only make ashtrays out of tin cans at summer camp. Slackers! From NBC News:

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., wrote on X that the Justice Department and the FBI had plans to “assassinate” Trump “and gave the green light.” Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., posted on X that President Joe Biden “ordered the hit on Trump at Mar-a-Lago,” Trump’s residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

The posts came shortly after Trump, who was not at Mar-a-Lago on the day of the FBI search , wrote on Truth Social that he had been shown reports indicating “that Crooked Joe Biden’s DOJ, in their Illegal and UnConstitutional Raid of Mar-a-Lago, AUTHORIZED THE FBI TO USE DEADLY (LETHAL) FORCE.”
Eek!

At issue is a passage from an FBI document related to the night they served the warrant at Mar-a-Lago in connection with the Pool Shed Papers . It contained a standard restatement of the FBI policy on deadly force that was developed in the wake of the Ruby Ridge episode in 1992. From Just Security:

As the FBI was compelled to spell out in response to Trump’s Truth Social post, the search of Mar-a-Lago followed the Bureau’s standard operating procedure, which “includes a standard policy statement limiting the use of deadly force.”

The key word here is “limiting.” Most people will not be surprised to know that the FBI, like other law enforcement agencies, is authorized to use deadly force. FBI Special Agents—so named because of the “special” arrest powers that were granted to them in the early part of the twentieth century shortly after J. Edgar Hoover created the agency—are trained in the Justice Department’s deadly force policy almost daily while at the FBI Academy in Quantico.

In fact, most newly minted agents will be able to recite the first portion of the policy by heart: “[The FBI] may use deadly force only when necessary, that is, when the officer believes that the subject of such force poses an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury to the officer or another person.”

The serious problem here, of course, is that this probably has become an article of faith out there in distant MAGAland. “Biden sent the FBI to kill Our Leader” has likely appeared in thousands of emails from thousands of anxious uncles who already have Done Their Own Research. And no amount of debunking is going to help. It’s part of the campaign now. Instant history. Poison, with empty calories.
