York Trial Program Graduates Second Cohort of Green-Job Students
A pilot program in York that’s preparing students for the impending deluge of jobs in the renewables space has graduated its second cohort of green-job students. Held in CASA’s Roosevelt Welcome Center in York, the program graduated three students in its first run and graduated another six students in its second run.
The global transition to green energy is speeding up amid significant drops in green-energy infrastructure costs and rising investment in renewables across the United States, the European Union and China. Although some green-energy opponents feared that transitioning to renewables would have a negative economic impact, especially in communities whose livelihoods were tied to fossil fuels and the auto industry, experts say a green economy won’t harm communities if the transition is handled correctly.
A University of Massachusetts Amherst study investigating how Inflation Reduction Act climate investments would impact job growth found that the energy efficiency workforce in Pennsylvania alone could increase from close to 75,000 right now to 200,000. Individuals in the trade retiring from their practices are also contributing to the workforce gap. The two crops of green-energy graduates from CASA’s Roosevelt Welcome Center could fill the growing demand for green-energy experts over the next decade.
CASA’s Pennsylvania director Daniel Alvalle says that as immigrant, Black, Latinx and Indigenous communities are affected the most by climate change, the program equips them with the skills they need to shield their homes from the climate-change-induced extreme weather. The graduates learned everything from installing insulation and sealing air leaks to doing home-energy audits. According to Alvalle, most of the folks CASA works with face energy-efficiency issues or need help to maintain their houses.
Home energy use in America consumes a significant amount of electricity and is a major contributor to national and global greenhouse-gas emissions. Energy Information Administration data shows that when indirect emissions from electricity use are accounted for, home-energy use contributes to around 20% of greenhouse-gas emissions. One of the most effective means of cutting carbon pollution and reducing household energy costs is energy-efficiency measures.
Programs that educate the workforce on green energy will also be critical to developing the burgeoning green-energy space. Each of the pilot program’s graduates earned up to four certificates: an OSHA 10 Construction Certificate, a Pennsylvania College of Technology Workforce Development Certificate, an EPA Lead Paint Renovator Certificate and the Building Performance Institute’s Building Science Principles Certificate.
Many higher institutions of learning need to take up the challenge of preparing individuals to leverage the upcoming specialized green-energy jobs given the rate at which companies such as FuelPositive Corp.
