After a fellowship in hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation at Universitätsklinikum-Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany, he became a Consultant Hepatobiliary Surgery and Transplantation at Erasmus Medical Center and was later appointed Program Leader of Liver Transplantation there. In 2012, he was appointed as a full hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation professor at Amsterdam University Medical Center. He is currently the Clinical Director and Scientific co-director of Cancer Center Amsterdam at Amsterdam UMC.
