Why then do many elderly have a delayed immune response?
Why do some diseases simply fester in the elderly, without any or only a mitigated immune response to eradicate it?
There is a breakdown in DNA repair, there is a breakdown in mitochondria, there is a breakdown in tissue repair, there is a breakdown in innate and adaptive immune response, there is just a generalized breakdown in the entire machinery of maintaining life. These insults to the body increase CCR5 levels as a response although the rest of the body is not up to the task of fixing things. That higher level of CCR5 just adds insult to injury leading to many of the diseases related to ageing.
