Exploring Social Benefits of Switching to Renewable Energy

Significant advancements in solar and wind energy coupled with ecofriendly policies have made renewable energy incredibly affordable and available over the past couple of decades. The resulting surge in renewable energy adoption in major polluting nations such as the United States and China has led to major environmental, economic and social benefits.

Data shows that renewable energy production reached more than 8,000 terawatt hours of electricity in 2022, 198% more than the renewable energy produced in 2000. Nations are investing in and producing more clean energy than ever before, largely thanks to the reduction in the cost of renewables. Solar power costs have fallen by nearly 99% over the past several decades, thanks to continuous technological advancements. In addition, wind energy is now as affordable as fossil fuel-generated energy.

Unsurprisingly, the surge in clean-energy adoption has had major benefits for the environment. Communities that replaced fossil-fuel-fired power plants report cleaner air and enjoy increased access to affordable renewable energy. Increased renewables use has also made vulnerable power grids more resilient and helped to support economic development. Solar and wind farms have helped create job opportunities in a relatively sustainable market while providing communities with clean energy.

For communities that depend on coal-fired power plants for employment, the idea of replacing these facilities with cleaner alternatives often results in fears of employment loss. However, solar and wind farms can create good jobs for the community without harming the environment or endangering public health.

While fossil-fuel extraction and use are proven to cause significant harm to the environment, renewables are key to curbing greenhouse gas emissions, cleaning air levels and mitigating climate change. Solar and wind energy use produces minimal to zero emissions and can allow energy-intensive industries such as power generation to function effectively without harming the environment and communities around them.

With clean energy poised to make up a significant portion of the world’s energy mix, a career in renewables prepares energy industry workers for a green future and grants them transferable skills that could open more doors in the employment market.

Renewables could also help to achieve energy equality in emerging and developing countries. Access to reliable energy is a key metric for growth, and nations that have had continued access to energy typically have stronger economies. As per data from World Bank’s 2023 Energy Progress Report, countries with the lowest GDP (gross domestic product), such as Chad, Niger and Burundi, also have poor access to electricity. Clean energy could help such nations gain energy neutrality by creating decentralized energy systems, creating new jobs for the community, and improving public health.

The new energy technologies that are being commercialized by companies such as FuelPositive Corp. (TSX.V: NHHH) (OTCQB: NHHHF) provide examples of how green-energy projects can create new employment opportunities that are often more lucrative than the fossil-fuel jobs they are replacing.
