Could Marijuana Hold Key to Addressing Pain Related to Aging?

Marijuana contains more than 100 compounds, the major ones being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Of the two primary compounds, THC induces a high when consumed while CBD does not. Research has found that some of marijuana’s compounds safeguard the brain’s neurons.

Some of marijuana’s antioxidant properties can also fight oxidative stress, which influences aging. Oxidative stress refers to a disruption in the balance between antioxidant defenses and the production of free radicals in the body.

With regard to aging, age-related decreases in physiologic functions are caused by an accumulation of oxidative damage to macromolecules. This, researchers believe, increases with age. Marijuana is said to work by slowing down cellular damage. This suggests that in addition to getting you high, marijuana may also be the key to improving your golden years.

This finding comes as studies into how marijuana affects cognitive function in older individuals continues to gain momentum. Initial research suggests a positive link between improved cognitive performance and moderate use of marijuana in the aging population.

Moderate use of the drug is key, with researchers noting that the relationship between cognitive performance, marijuana and aging involves consideration of both frequency and dosage.

These aren’t marijuana’s only benefits either, as the drug has also shown promise in pain management and reducing inflammation. Chronic pain is common in older individuals, which means marijuana could offer some relief, especially when conventional drugs fall short.

There are risks to marijuana use, however, especially for older individuals. For instance, THC’s psychoactive effects vary among people and can affect those with pre-existing mental health disorders as well as those with lower tolerance. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that while cognitive function may improve when the drug is used in moderation, not managing consumption carefully may result in cognitive impairment.

Furthermore, marijuana’s interactions with other drugs should also be considered. Older people with prescriptions to manage other conditions should ensure that marijuana doesn’t negatively interact with their other prescriptions.

It should be noted that the link between aging and marijuana is not standard for everybody. Individual responses may vary, stemming from different factors such as lifestyle choices, genetics and existing health conditions. This highlights the need for personalized approaches when considering marijuana for age-related concerns.

This field of study is also still growing, with researchers working toward better understanding how marijuana affects the aging process and if it enhances quality of life.

In the meantime, people accessing cannabis products from licensed companies such as Software Effective Solutions Corp. (d/b/a MedCana) (OTC: SFWJ) can continue using those products for medical or recreational reasons, as long as they avoid excessive consumption. Anything taken in excess can have unwelcome effects.
