Bless her pointed little noggin. She's not the only politician to have had trouble with slavery.

Neither Abe nor Jeff knew what to do with the issue of slavery at the beginning of the war and, to a large degree, both made attempts to keep it under wraps and with good reason. For example, the "average" Billy Yank that put on the hue of blue was out to save the Union, pure and simple. Abe would have probably had a terrible time filling the blue uniforms had he took a "free the slaves" approach to recruitment instead of the "let's save the Union" approach.

Bro Jeff also had his problems with the peculiar institution. Only a small percentage of Southerners actually owned slaves and probably just a very few young men would have put on the butternut uniforms had Jeff called them to protect slavery. Jeff's solution to his problem was fairly simple, he played on their sense of patriotism and stoked fear that their rights would soon be taken away.

I believe it was from one of Catton's books where I read about a Union officer interrogating a Confederate prisoner Gettysburg.

Q. Johnny Reb, why are you fighting to protect slavery?

A. I ain't fittin' for no Darkie one way or the next, Ima fittin' for my "rats".

After figuring out what the Reb meant by rats the Union officer then asked,

Q. And what are your rats?

A. I don't rightly know but Ima sure I must have some.

Lincoln's "slavery problems", to a large degree, ended with the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 following a victory at the Battle of Antietam in Sept. 1862.

In my opinion, had Grant been in charge instead of McClellan, the war would have been over in Sept. 1862. Grant would not have been shy about using around 95,000 troops to go after lee's less than 50,000.

8. Does this stupid woman not realize that she can never be elected

Governor because of her race?

11. Not to mention gender, as a Republican

There's a helluva lot of male chauvinism among republicans. I guarantee a bunch lose their stomach for voting if they have to vote for - gasp - a woman!!! - for Governor.

Ya got that right. We would never elect a woman to such an important position in the Sandlapper State. And everyone should realize that we wouldn't even consider a black for senator. We'uns is just way too racist and chauvinistic to do such a thing.
