Decades ago my parents both worked fairly high up for government agencies and were incredibly careful to keep even the *optics*/appearance of their work actions beyond suspicion. The *appearance* of --blanking on the exact word they'd use -- was just as potentially damaging as actual bad action because of the public's loss of trust in government. They'd be sickened by the FDA's behavior.
