Sorry if this offends anybody, but I'll just say it. Government jobs do not generally attract the BEST talent available. IF they are that good, they are generally going to make a lot more money in the private sector. I am talking about jobs that require significant higher education, not rank and file. I know of many examples of friends/associates who were being pursued by agencies such as the FBI, FDA, those dealing with cyber security, etc. in which the compensation packages just weren't competitive (yes, even considering having a federal pension). As such, it doesn't surprise me that you have the Jeff Murray's of the world in some of those important positions.
